Sumbu National Park Zambia

This park is located on the south shores of lake Tanganyika in the distant northern region of Zambia. Nsumbu National Park covers stretches over 2,000sq. km of land and includes 100 kilometers of immaculate land on the shores of this big lake. Its beauty is characterized by vertical cliffs, natural bays sandy beaches, rocky coves and to the rocky hills with deep valleys in its center. The river Lufubu that flows through the valley is bordered by a projection of 300 meter escapement on both sides.

What To See

Visit Sumbu national park and see the large crowds of elephants.The western boundary of the National Park is shielded by Tondwa Game Management Area, an IUCN Category VIII Multiple Use Management Area that covers 54,000 ha. The larger portion of  Kaputa Game Management Area occupying 360,000 ha is also neighboring  the National Park in the north west & south west. the two Game Management Areas and Nsumbu National Park therefore form key portions of a network of sheltered  places in the whole of Zambia.

The large river Lufubu cuts apart the park from the west up to the east and also distinguishes the parks eastern boundary up to where it pours into Lake Tanganyika. River Nkamba and river Chisala Rivers are brief and less important than the river Lufubu, drain into the Nkamba and Sumbu Bays correspondingly. The Nkamba Bay is a very gorgeous valley rich with a variety of wildlife as compared to other regions in the Park. The largest portion of the park is has a thicket of combretum. On the surrounding areas of the lakeshore are numerous candelabra and trees strangler figs in addition to the weird but attractive boulders hanging on one another.

Despite the number of wildlife dropping in the park, existing still are a variety of animals and many are being revived and seeing them is not a guarantee.  Hartebeest, Roan, buffalo, eland and sable are seen frequently, in addition to lions, zebra s, leopards and elephants. Bushbuck, puku and warthog are also common along the beach. The uncommon blue duiker which is a forest antelope, is one of the unique species in the Park, together with the shy sitatunga that resides in the swamp. Other commonly sighted species include the side-striped jackal, waterbuck impala, spotted hyena reedbuck, and serval. the crocodiles congest the lakeEnjoy a close view of different bird species in Zambia on the border of the National Park, and for that reason swimming is prohibited. Some crocodiles grow up to a length of 6 meters. Hippos frequently appear in the night near the lodges to rest in the grass.

 Bird life is quit creative with migrating bird from South Africa and East Africa stopping in this area. The Flamingos are the most beautiful among the migrating birds and among the other species that dwell at the lake shore are spoonbill, ducks skimmer, herons, whiskered tern and many others. The commonly seen varieties include the black-backed gull, African skimmer, grey-headed gull, fish eagle and the white-winged black tern. The Pel’s fishing owl and palm nut vulture are seen once in a while.After visiting the  park,you may proceed to your safari lodge and relax with excellent facilities and services offered.
